about us

The Hookers and Slicers Golf Club was established in 1992 when a group of members of the St Albans Football Club sought an alternative pass time after their football playing days were over. More importantly the club was established to provide an opportunity for friends to catch up for a social game of golf on a monthly basis. The first game was contested at Kyneton on 17th May 1992 with 22 new members attending. Of those foundation members there are still 12 of them playing as at 2007. Those foundation members are Rod Brown, David Pisani, Michael Portelli, Mitch Stepniak, Mark Farrugia, Michael McLaughlin, Eddie Bender, Peter Trimboli, Vern Ryan, Dave Dennison, Cec Gryszan and John Sipple.

The Hookers and Slicers enjoys significant support from its major sponsor in the St Albans Sports Club who provide funding to enable members to continue to enjoy subsidised games of golf. In return for that generous support part of the annual subscription to the Hookers and Slicers is allocated to the St Albans Sports Club to pay for our membership of that organisation. The club organises monthly games of golf at selected courses around Melbourne and an annual golf trip to the Murray River region. The golf trips are keenly attended by the members with any aspiring wife or girlfriend warned well in advance that once a year she will lose her man to the club for a long weekend of golf.

Over the years the members of the club have moved to various parts of Melbourne (and beyond) and the golf club offers those not residing nearby to make an effort to catch up with mates on a monthly basis for a social game of golf. To this end the club has enjoyed remarkable success with nothing but good times had by all members when we get together. The members have also been encouraged to introduce their friends to the club and now some of those members introduced have enjoyed the atmosphere so much they are heavily involved in the committee and organisation of various events during the year. It is fair to say that without the introduction of these new members the club would be struggling to survive today.

The Hookers and Slicers welcomes visitors and new membership applications and looks forward to many more years of golfing fun. If you are interested in joining the club for a round or as a member please click here.

Pressure is on Stu Battye (and he is feeling it)!!

Stu Battye has been installed as the early favourite to take home the Club Championship this year and it looks like the pressure is already starting to show on this normally laid back character.

Seems he isn't too happy with his equipment at the moment so he has gone and bought a new driver and putter. Obviously he hasn't got the confidence in his game to keep those 250m bombs going straight down the middle as the business end of the season looms.

Unfortunately new putters and drivers can't help build fractured minds, perhaps a visit to our resident Sports Psycholigist George Nata may be more beneficial Stu.
